After grappling with this and that I have decided to outpour what I think I have learned about life from my own experiences, including teaching philosophy and world faiths, in a blog in a hope that somebody might read it and give feedback.
How is that we can receive and lose all within a short space of time? Do such situations happen to remind us that we just don’t have the control we would like to have over our lives no matter how we try.
Wisdom lies in knowing the difference between the things we can change and those we cannot. Don’t waste time fretting over things beyond our influence but concentrate on making the right choices in the areas where we can make a difference. Don’t worry about what is going to happen in the future but live for the moment you are in. This does not mean a carte blanche permission to do whatever we like and be damned but rather to make sure that each hour counts.
Like Pollyanna, learning to count our blessing can help us to appreciate the value of what we have and recognise the folly of placing too much time and effort in areas of life which are illusion or, even worse, delusion.
We are living at the mercy of chance, fate, or destiny – whichever term we prefer to use. But this does not mean we should feel down at heart. Instead, we can grasp the wheel and try to steer a course ahead, negotiating any obstacles we meet, accelerating or slowing accordingly. We may not be able to pick what befalls us but we can manage how we respond to it.
